Steenbok Self-Catering

Location

Brandvlei, Northern Cape

68 Louw St, Brandvlei, 8915, South Africa

Steenbok Self-Catering lies midway between Cape Town and the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, in the small Karoo town of Brandvlei. The town grew where the trekboer Ou Brand camped beside the Sak River, a dry riverbed that floods only after good rains, and it lies in the Bushmanland, also known as the Thirst Land. Not to be confused with the Brandvlei near Worcester in the Western Cape.

Things to see nearby

After the summer rains (November to March) the salt pans around town become bird sanctuaries, drawing birders in search of Karoo species. In town, the Dutch Reformed Church is a fine example of Neo-Gothic architecture, while the farms Lekkerlê and Kans display splendid San rock engravings. A short drive away is Verneukpan, where Sir Malcolm Campbell attempted the world land-speed record in his Bluebird in 1929. Further north lie Upington, the Augrabies Falls National Park and the Kalahari, and to the south the starry skies of Sutherland.
